If a workpiece, a positioning process or a hit ratio were concerned, tolerances to be adhered to and deviations can be specified in units of measure such as millimetres or µm. In the translation process, we will not refine the method all the way down to character level since whatever we define has to be measurable. Even if slips of the pen occur (unintentionally), the sentence remains readable and the message of the translation will be understood correctly.

Why is 99% quality not good enough?


Let us assume we translate 4 million words a year, which actually is a realistic figure. With a success rate of 99%, 40,000 words would be incorrect. According to six sigma (0.00034 % or 3.4 dpm (defects per million)), we would only have 13.6 errors per year.

Quality Assurance Procedures at TTS


As one of the first translation service providers in Europe, TTS GmbH was already certified in 2004 according to the quality standard ISO 9001. This international standard specifies the demands made on the quality management system of an organisation in order to increase customer satisfaction. No more than approx. 5% of companies in our market segment have prescribed to similarly stringent specifications.


TTS GmbH is audited by RINA Germany GmbH (34241/16/AN) according to ISO9001 and ISO17100.


How can the quality of translations be checked without simply relying on the four-eyes principle. Particularly for an agency that needs to be able to rely on its partners and whose employees are not competent in every language, this requirement necessitates suitable tools that are easy to use.


As a matter of course, especially for technical translations, it is important to check the technical expertise and comprehensibility of the content in addition to spelling and grammar. Compliance with terminology - at times proper names that need to be kept - and equivalence of terms in the foreign languages is to be ensured, as well as adaptation to the country-specific conventions, typography and correct syntax.


For safe order processing and tracking of individual process steps, an internal workflow system is used, which monitors any query up to delivery.


Once a translation has been completed and proofread by the translator as well as a third person1), the documents will be reviewed at TTS. As far as possible, we read all documents at the same time, so as not to miss any inconsistencies. The project manager defines the points to be checked, and all instances deviating from this specification are listed.


1) Requirements according to ISO17100


Standard 5.3.3 requires proofreading by a third, independent proofreader. He or she must have the same skills as the translator.


However, in practice, often final proofreading is performed in-house by your employees, your local office or your representation office abroad, to consider your requirements like CI and those of the local market. For this reason, this is offered as a separate service (to avoid double effort with regard to time and costs).


Fundamentally, our standard service meets the requirements of ISO17100, apart from item 5.3.3, which is not desired by our customers for reasons of cost and time.


However, if you would like a translation including proofreading by a third party according to ISO17100, 5.3.3, please contact one of our employees. This is of course possible (except in some cases for some exotic languages and highly specialised subject areas).
